Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for overall operation of assigned County Service Center; plans, schedules and inspects all roadway/street and drainage construction, maintenance and repair projects within assigned area of the County; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff at assigned County Service Center
  • Oversees the daily operation of assigned County Service Center
  • Ensures that all streets, roadways and drains are constructed and maintained in safe and operable condition
  • Determines the most cost-effective method of roadway/street repair and maintenance
  • Monitors and assesses production rate, equipment utilization and material resource management
  • Evaluates most cost-effective methods of roadway/street repair and maintenance
  • Maintains equipment and machinery in safe operating condition
  • Performs related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and six (6) years progressively responsible experience in road maintenance and construction including two (2) years in a lead or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of road repairs and maintenance; comprehensive knowledge of all road construction tools and equipment; good knowledge of safety standards and practices
  • Skill in the operation of all related tools and equipment; skill in mathematical and general engineering functions
  • Ability to perform a variety of road repair and maintenance functions including the operation of heavy road construction equipment and machinery; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, department heads, County employees, outside agencies/vendors and the general public
  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas Class C driver’s license; must secure and maintain a non-commercial pesticide applicator license from Texas Department of Agriculture within six months of employment, promotion or transfer.
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • Required to be on-call 24 hours a day
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are primarily outside with exposure to temperature variations; occasional exposure to damp/wet surfaces, dusty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels
  • Frequent carrying/lifting of 10-25 pounds and 50-100 pounds occasionally
  • Occasionally moves about the office
  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Positions self to perform essential functions
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
