Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of advanced maintenance repairs on county fleet conventional and electric vehicles; diagnose, repairs, and replaces defective vehicle system components; utilizes diagnostic scanners and complex maintenance software to determine defective or malfunctioning vehicle systems; inspects, checks and analyzes operational conditions of vehicle systems; installs and removes special equipment; conducts vehicle permit inspections; and performs related duties as required
Duties and Responsibilities

- Performs routine electrical vehicle (EV) maintenance; regularly checks battery charging levels, battery fluid levels, filler openings, and connections, and assessing EV battery’s cycle count
- Uses assigned technical hardware and existing database systems to input accurate and detailed descriptions of the status of vehicles and all related work activities. Responsible for the security and authorized use assigned technical hardware
- Diagnoses, removes and replaces and repairs electrical and electronic systems including engine controls, accessories, lighting, charging and cranking systems, engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, emission controls, cooling and exhaust systems
- Performs advanced level maintenance on all county fleet gasoline, diesel, and electric powered vehicles and equipment to include removing, repairing, rebuilding, and/or replacing major mechanical components and any related sub-components to manufacturer's specifications
- Diagnoses, removes and replaces and repairs air, hydraulic and electric brake systems, suspensions, chassis, steering, tires, pumps, motors, tanks, valves, pipes, and hoses
- Performs a variety of complex maintenance and specialized repair tasks on law enforcement, emergency response, and support vehicles and equipment
- Diagnoses, removes and replaces and repairs heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems; clutches, transmissions, drive shafts, axles, chain drives, u-joints, and flex couplings
- Operates and maintains tools and machinery used in the maintenance and repair of light to medium duty vehicles
- Performs diagnostic tests using electronic diagnostic software, web based systems, and loaded electronic programs on various platforms and sub-systems to accurately identify malfunctions and performs corrective maintenance repairs
- Assists and guides less experienced mechanics in the proper operation, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
- Performs annual DOT required inspections and emissions test on vehicles and equipment
- Accurately records time and information on work performed in Fleet Management Information System
- Ensures work area is kept clean, organized, and other shop areas are organized to prevent accidents or injuries as required
- Promotes and ensures proper practice of operational risk management, safety, occupational health, employee wellness, and fire prevention program
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
-
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and six (6) years’ experience of journeyman level experience in gasoline or diesel engine maintenance repairs; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience
- Knowledge of standard maintenance repair methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diverse gasoline, diesel and/or electric powered vehicles and equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions relating to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair; mechanical, electrical and hydraulic principles as applied to maintenance and repairs of vehicles and equipment; high degree of technical skill with automotive and other motorized equipment; knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems and fleet management concepts
- Skill in use and care of tools, machinery and testing equipment utilized in technical maintenance and major repair of vehicles and equipment
- Ability to perform technical maintenance and major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs; use and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints and technical publications; operate testing equipment to detect vehicle and equipment malfunctions and to identify repair requirements; perform tasks requiring physical strength and endurance; understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare simple reports; acquire additional skill in performing complex maintenance and specialized repair tasks; operate a variety of motor vehicles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, other government agencies, outside organizations, and the public
- Must obtain and maintain an Electric Vehicle Technician Certification within 1-year of employment
- Must be certified in at least six (6) categories by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence; must be ASE or IMACA (International Mobile Air Conditioning Association) certified for automotive air conditioning work
- Must provide own tools to perform essential job functions, including impact tools up to ½", wrench sets, and electrical troubleshooting equipment
- Must have valid driver’s license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to be on call 24 hours
- May be required to work weekends
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
- Working conditions are primarily indoors with exposure to temperature variations; occasional exposure to hazardous fluids such as petroleum, oil, lubricate, antifreeze, Freon, battery acids, solvents and fumes
- Physical demands include frequent carrying/lifting 10-25 lbs., and 50-75 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; subject to stooping, crawling, kneeling, handling, twisting, reaching, pushing, and balancing to perform essential functions
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
