Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving and logging in evidence and/or property; maintains chain of custody; enters evidence and/or property into computer; maintains evidence in secure environment; prepares and distributes reports; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives from law enforcement officers, investigators or medical examiners crime scene evidence and/or seized property
  • Enters evidence, both stolen and recovered property information in computer database
  • Maintains inventory of evidence and/or property in a secure environment
  • Prepares official reports and distributes reports to proper agencies and appropriate individuals
  • Performs filing and other clerical activities
  • Answers telephone, routes calls and takes messages utilizing some discretion
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years general office and administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet software; knowledge of basic office procedures
  • Skill in filing and organizing of material; skill in operating personal computer and basic office equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and strict operating procedures; ability to maintain records, compile data and organize reports; ability to communicate with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other government agencies, outside organizations, co-workers, other County employees, news media and the general public
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the FBI and/or the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must secure and maintain a pre-employment drug screen and physical
  • Receives and records seized property such as weapons, televisions, stereos and money, as well as in-coming weapons and articles to see if they have been reported stolen from another agency
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are in an office environment with exposure to hazardous/biohazardous and flammable liquids, unfavorable fumes, vapors, odors or infectious diseases. In the Sheriff's Department, working conditions are in a warehouse environment with exposure to hazardous/biohazardous and flammable liquids, unfavorable fumes, vapors, odors or infectious diseases
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying of 15-50 plus pounds constantly; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to handling, walking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions
