Summary

Under direction, is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Laundry unit; establishes and modifies work schedules; oversees laundry preparations; maintains inmate laundry supply and fixed-asset inventories; troubleshoots equipment problems; prepares and submits reports; assists with preparation of unit budget; monitors work unit contracts; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees and trains inmates assigned to the Laundry unit
  • Supervises, trains and evaluates Laundry/ Technicians; at the Main Jail and Jail Annex
  • Establishes and modifies work schedules and procedures to meet shift workload demands; provides analysis on cost efficiencies relating to the laundry operations
  • Oversees the daily preparation and distribution of inmate laundry; compiles and analyzes statistical data on a daily bases on laundry logistics; coordinates and communicates discrepancies with other Bexar County departments
  • Maintains inmate laundry supply and fixed-asset inventories
  • Troubleshoots laundry equipment problems and coordinates repair and replacement of laundry equipment
  • Prepares and submits various laundry activity reports
  • Assists Jail Support Services Manager with preparation of the work unit budget; prepares and makes recommendations on an operating budget exceeding $500,000. Prepares capital equipment budget exhibits for equipment replacement; provides technical assistance on studies and analysis of alternate site locations
  • Monitors work unit contracts to ensure vendor compliance and develops specifications and recommendations for new contracts
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Business or a closely related field, and three (3) years laundry/clothing operations experience including one (1) year supervisory experience preferably in an correctional institution environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of laundry operations and procedures; knowledge of jail operations and procedures; knowledge of laundry equipment; knowledge of safety standards and procedures
  • Skill in dealing with hostile, abusive and irrational individuals; skill in understanding and applying jail standards; skill in utilizing window-based software, Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, PowerPoint, Inmate Management Information System (IMIS)
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, inmates, vendors, co-workers, other County employees; ability to understand and make recommendation on security enhancements to the work environment
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must secure and maintain a pre-employment physical screen and drug screen
  • Required to be on-call 24-hours a day
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • May work weekends and perform shift work
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are primarily in a jail environment with constant exposure to violent or hostile people, hazardous materials, unfavorable fumes and odors, wet surfaces and high noise areas.
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 30-50 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard. Subject to handling, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions.
