Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for supervisory duties related to the circulation of library materials, requiring the exercise of judgment based upon knowledge of library procedures and on-the-job experience. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location
Central Library; 600 Soledad or one of 28 library locations.

Work Hours
Hours vary and are based on the needs of the department; Saturday - Friday workweek (weekends required)

Essential Job Functions

  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the circulation service points to ensure coverage and quality service.
  • Maintains records of work time, leave and vacation of employees.
  • Acts as Person In Charge in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor.
  • Leads Circulation Team in opening and closing duties.
  • Counsels and disciplines employees, when necessary.
  • Prepares monthly statistical reports and weekly cash reports as needed.
  • Distributes and maintains inventory of Circulation systemwide resources.
  • Prepares monthly statistical reports.
  • Performs monthly audit on secured lost & found items.
  • Submits service requests for computer/technical equipment and facility repair as needed.
  • Serves on system wide committees, as assigned, to develop circulation procedures and policies.
  • Answers inquires of a non-professional nature and refers users requiring professional assistance to appropriate staff person; responds to written patron inquiries through online platform or e-mail submissions.
  • Attends to the circulation needs of library patrons, including checking materials in and out, and resolving patron complaints regarding fees and other circulation matters; assists patrons in obtaining library cards.
  • Processes requests for book reservations by entering appropriate information into the library's automation system.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • One (1) year experience equal to Library Circulation Attendant or similar role.
  • Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's two-phased Cash-Handling Certification Training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public during routine transactions and problematical situations.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Ability to interpret and make decisions in conformance with regulations and department policies.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
