Job Summary

Under general direction of the Program Manager and following the Medical Director's Standing Delegation Orders, analyzes, plans, develops, and coordinates public health nursing services in a local area. Working conditions are primarily inside an office and clinical environment. Must be willing to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.
The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

- Analyzes, plans, develops, and coordinates public health nursing services in a public health facility.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff members.
- May provide public health nursing consultant services for non-family groups, such as child care centers, schools, nursing homes, and industries depending on area of assignment.
- May participate in case conferences with physicians, hospital personnel, and representatives of other agencies depending on area of assignment.
- Serves as instructor or leader for group educational projects such as parent study courses or vaccine related topics.
- Interprets policies, functions, and philosophy of the agency to professional and lay groups.
- Shares responsibility for the orientation, teaching, and supervision of inexperienced staff nurses, students, and nonclinical staff which includes sitting, standing, reaching, walking, and frequently lifting and carrying equipment up to 10 pounds to demonstrate nursing techniques.
- Works with faculty members of schools of nursing in guiding student field experience in public health nursing.
- Develops and conducts presentations.
- Writes records, insuring confidentiality of client.
- May serve as first responder during public health emergencies depending on area of assignment to include lifting and carrying equipment up to 30 pounds while administering care to patients.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements

- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Three (3) years of full-time successful experience as a practicing Registered Nurse, at least one (1) year of which shall have been experienced in a recognized public health agency.
- No substitution for education allowed.
- License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas.
Applicant Information- Bilingual in English & Spanish.
- Willing and able to work outside normal business hours.
- Experience with interpretation services.
- 5 years experience in Community Health/Public Health and clinical /internal medicine setting.
- Experience with electronic health record oversight.
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
