Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for serving as the initial point of contact with City of San Antonio employees whose vehicles experience performance/mechanical problems requiring service. Coordinates and monitors all active repairs and ensures quality workmanship is performed. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

- 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Monday - Friday
- 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; Monday - Friday
- 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Monday - Friday
Essential Job Functions

- Greets incoming customers/vehicle operators at the entrance of the repair facility, and assists in the preparation or review of the driver's report and opens work orders.
- Determines the need and extent of repairs and service to vehicles by road test, use of diagnostic devices, visual inspection of the vehicle, or questioning drivers about performance problems.
- Assists mechanics in logging on and off the computer (work order system), updates vehicle repair status, and closes out work orders using basic office
equipment. - Serves as lead mechanic in the absence of a supervisor; assigns and reviews completed work, may require frequently lifting/carrying 25 pounds as necessary to operate basic mechanic tools and equipment.
- Assists the Area Supervisor in the coordination of the Preventive Maintenance program.
- Contacts vendors that are servicing vehicles for status and coordinates pick-up.
- Keeps track and monitors vehicles throughout the repair process and provides updates to departments as needed; test drives vehicles and notifies customers when repairs are completed.
- Assists in the regular duties of mechanics and focuses primarily on quick fixes, minor repairs and those requiring a shorter time to complete.
- Resolves customer complaints and provides quality customer service.

Job Requirements

- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Three (3) years of experience as an automotive or truck mechanic.
- Previous experience as a government fleet or dealership service advisor preferred.
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

- Knowledge of the operation of a variety of automotive systems, accessories, and parts of systems, and how they are removed, installed, and
maintained. - Knowledge of various types of motors and equipment and their operation.
- Knowledge of procedures for diagnosing the reasons for motor or system failures and the steps necessary to correct the condition.
- Knowledge of mechanical tools and testing devices used in an automotive maintenance operation.
- Skill in diagnosing automotive-related problems.
- Skill in performing mechanical repairs to the equipment and vehicles assigned to the service center.
- Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools and equipment used in automotive, truck, and boat repair.
- Ability to organize preventive maintenance and mechanical repair work based on information gathered from the operator or the department.
- Ability to use the Fleet Management/Work order system.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Working conditions are primarily in a shop environment with exposure to dust, noise, and dangerous equipment and materials.
