Job Summary
Under direction, is responsible for planning, monitoring, and managing the operation of a food service facility (food staging area), responsible for serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks at the City's Pre-K 4 SA Education Centers. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.
This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

- Supervises and assists with serving and distributing quality food according to meal schedules, departmental policies, and procedures.
- Opens food receiving area and sets up equipment, ensuring serving line is set and ready for service at designated meal times.
- Inspects food items and/or supplies to verify quantity, quality, and specifications of orders from approved food service vendor.
- Delivers food trays to all students and staff.
- Ensures proper disposal and/or storage of food and supplies.
- Trains personnel in operational procedures.
- Maintains inventory records.
- Maintains all serving schedules and serves all food items according to menu specifications defined by departmental policies and procedures.
- Implements, follows and enforces high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety.
- Maintains accurate reports of daily and monthly financial, production, and activity records.
- Ensures delivery of special diets to designated students.
- Supports the coordination, planning, and implementation of nutrition related events with nutrition vendor that includes but not limited to farmer's markets, parent educational classes, and student instruction.
- Coordinates with the Education Center's outdoor learning team to develop lessons that combine garden activities and student menus.
- Responsible for developing monthly menu including special diets and needs.
- Responsible for weekly ordering of meals while ensuring the proper number of meals and snacks are delivered.
- Communicates effectively with Pre-K 4 SA staff, food service vendor, students and parents.
- Responsible for ensuring accuracy in all required documentation for meal reimbursements.
- Ensures sanitation and safety practices of food service operation meet established standards.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements

- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Two (2) years' experience in food service.
- Valid Food Handler Certification approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Physical Requirements- Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 10-50 pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate kitchen appliances. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, extensive walking and pushing, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily inside a food preparation area and a Center environment.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

- Knowledge of serving portions, and standards of sanitation and safety.
- Knowledge of proper disposal and/or storage of leftovers per Center policies and procedures.
- Knowledgeable of Texas Department of Family Services minimum standards.
- Knowledgeable of Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) standards
- Knowledge of food service equipment.
- Skill in the use of food serving equipment and cleaning equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions for food serving and safety procedures.
- Ability to inventory and record information accurately.
- Ability to analyze and utilize data to maintain an efficient and cost-effective cafeteria operation.
- Ability to provide direction and training to assigned staff as needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Center staff and the general public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position.
