Recreation Assistant (Athletics/Fitness) - Year-round Temporary

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing routine work in the recreational field with major emphasis in public contact. Assists a facilities supervisor in the operation of recreation facilities. Functions will vary dependent upon assignment. Exercises no supervision.
This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.
Work Location
Locations will vary: community centers in various areas of San Antonio. At the department's discretion, the work location may be subject to change. Will participate in events for programs such as Fitness in the Park Classes and/or open gym programs.
Work Hours- 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Monday - Friday
- 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday
Essential Job Functions
-
- Provides a high level of customer service while interacting with visitors and class participants helping deliver motivation, encouragement and fitness education.
- Performs record keeping duties such as attendance, individual statistics, and other applicable records.
- Prepares gyms, courts, and other recreation facilities for fitness programs, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Directs visitors to proper person, facility, or office, according to their requests.
- May be subject to traveling and working at various locations while transporting necessary supplies and equipment.
- Performs assorted maintenance duties pertaining to spectator areas, restrooms, and scorekeeper areas.
- Organizes training programs for participants.
- Assists with minimal marketing for fitness and exercise programs through the creation, distribution and promotion of program informative flyers.
- Leads challenging and entertaining activities such as group fitness classes, which includes sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling, to interact with attendees.
- Cares for and ensures equipment is in safe working condition, and may check facility for safety hazards prior to start of play each day.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements

- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Experience implementing and leading programs in fitness and recreation for various age groups.
- Experience presenting to small and large groups in indoor and outdoor venues.
- Knowledge of different effective teaching techniques, procedures and methods.
- Knowledge and comprehension of new and current fitness trends.
- Ability to provide direction to large groups of people during activities.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
