Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for advanced journey technical and limited professional civil engineering work. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists engineer in the supervision of personnel within a section or subsection, often communicating directly or electronically to assist with engineering tasks.
  • Plans and organizes work assignments and maintains status reports, records, and budget information.
  • Coordinates and manages projects with other City departments, utilities, governing agencies, contractors, engineers, etc.
  • Arranges, attends, and conducts various project related meetings.
  • Reviews preliminary engineering reports.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for various projects.
  • Prepares designs and preliminary and final plans for the construction of projects such as storm or sanitary sewers.
  • Prepares specifications for construction projects.
  • Prepares preliminary cost estimates for construction projects.
  • Trains and directs subordinates in reviewing and monitoring assigned projects.
  • Performs field investigations of customer service requests and makes appropriate recommendations for maintenance activities and/or engineering solutions by touring and positioning while observing the sites in diverse environments.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Associate's of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in drafting, surveying, or engineering.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic Knowledge of drainage analysis
  • Knowledge of and skill using GIS.
  • Advanced Knowledge of MS Office Excel.
  • Bilingual Spanish is a plus.

Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Knowledge of engineering and drafting principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of construction materials.
  • Knowledge of surveying techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and personnel management.
  • Skill in conducting field investigations to evaluate infrastructure issues and provide appropriate recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to reduce and plot field notes and to make field and office computations.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and compile engineering data.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex engineering and mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are primarily in an office environment, or inside and outside. Outside working conditions may require climbing steep embankments and other areas to adequately assess infrastructure concerns.
