Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for providing the day-to-day supervision and direction to assigned shift(s) and providing a safe and secure environment at the San Antonio International Airport by recognizing and responding to violations of local, state, and federal regulations and ordinances, to include closure of a terminal or concourse. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday for training
Rotating Shifts - Sunday - Wednesday & Wednesday - Saturday
4:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
10:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
2:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinates and supervises Airport Security staff on assigned shift.
  • Interviews, selects, supervises, develops, evaluates, counsels, and if necessary, disciplines personnel according to established COSA policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Monitors airport tenants and their leased areas for possible violations or non compliance with the Airport Rules and Regulations, the Airport Security Program (ASP), and other applicable regulations. Takes corrective action and/or issues notices of non-compliance as appropriate.
  • Coordinates daily security compliance activities to include access point alarm checks, alarm response, proper display of airport identification media in the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA), random vehicle/ID checks in the secured areas and airport construction projects that impact airport security.
  • Responds to all airport security emergencies and implements the Airport Security Plan and/or Airport Emergency Plan as required. Makes immediate and vital decisions affecting the airport and air carriers during airport security emergencies.
  • Documents and communicates security events through incident/information reports, daily logs, and monthly reports.
  • Works with the Transportation Security Administration, federal state and local law enforcement agencies, airport tenants and stakeholders to ensure a secure environment.
  • Develops, implements and oversees programs that promote a proactive approach to the continued secure operation of air carriers and commercial operators at San Antonio International Airport. These programs include Security Compliance & Enforcement Initiatives, recurring airport employee and tenant security training, Always Challenge Everyone (ACE) SIDA program and tenant security programs.
  • Inspects terminal sterile areas, public access areas, air carrier ramps, secured area direct access points, perimeter access points and their associated areas to ensure compliance with Transportation Security Administration TSR 1540, TSR 1542 and the ASP, to ensure conditions are secure for the continued operation of passenger screening, access control and air carrier operations regulated by TSR 1544.
  • Conducts initial and recurring Airport Security training.
  • Frequently communicates with assigned staff by various methods using office equipment and producing reports, responds to emergencies and incidents.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of experience in security, peace officer, airport operations, or other security related field.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor
    Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment and a Criminal History Records check upon employment.
  • Maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport.
  • Must be able to obtain an Airport Security Coordinator's certificate within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience in airport security, law enforcement, military, or aviation operations.
  • Experience responding to and managing security incidents such as access control breaches, alarms, or emergency situations.
  • Experience overseeing landside operations such as traffic control, parking enforcement, or curbside management.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with multiple stakeholders, including TSA, airport operations, and local law enforcement.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and evaluate staff in structured, compliance -driven environment.
Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, practices, techniques and methods of aviation security programs and policies, including compliance and enforcement.
  • Knowledge of Transportation Security Administration TSR 1520, 1540, 1542 and 1544.
  • Knowledge of Transportation Security Administration Security Directives 1542 series.
  • Knowledge of basic supervisory skills, techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of airport emergency operations, methods, procedures and practices.
  • Skill in the proficient operation of personal computers and associated software.
  • Skill in utilizing a two-way UHF and VHF radios.
  • Skill in analyzing potential problems or deviations from security standards to coordinate development of security plans and corrective action compliance plans.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and, evaluate assigned staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with airport tenants, governmental agencies, and other Aviation Department employees.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to develop work plans and schedules.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable airport security conditions and take appropriate action to ensure the security of the airport, air carriers and commercial operators.
  • Ability to prepare accurate, concise, and detailed reports.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are primarily inside and outside with frequent exposure to loud noises and temperature extremes.
