Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for supervising the operation of the Marketing, Communications (Public Relations), and Tourism Divisions. Manages all San Antonio International Airport (SAT) marketing programs, brand strategic direction, and execution to attract the interest of leisure and Airport attendee travelers, locally, nationally, and internationally. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinates the marketing activities by setting the goals and objectives regarding online engagement and earned media value and administrating advertising budgets to help reach such goals.
  • Coordinates and supervises Public Relations and Marketing agency resources and assigns budgets in order to reach pre-established goals.
  • Directs Media strategic development and responsible for successful traditional, digital and social media negotiation, and plan implementation.
  • Provides direct supervision of the Division Directors, as well as supervising the Assistant Marketing Managers in executing all Marketing/Advertising, Consumer, Tourism and Communications (PR) programs.
  • Direct and execute brand, advertising and customer experience research needs to determine successful Sales Advertising, Branding and Communication strategies.
  • Steward all brand efforts and direct the brands strategic evolution.
  • Responsible for all internal and external communications needs including being a spokesperson for the organization for all media requests.
  • Crisis management communications supervision.
  • Directs Division Managers in the development of budgets, program of work, and both short and long term sales and marketing strategies.
  • Provides oversight of technology requirements and needs of the divisions.
  • Responsible for the assignment of special project, to include special events and other special projects as required by the Director and/or Assistant Director.
  • Coordinates the partnership between the Department and the San Antonio Hotel/Attraction industry in terms of the convention, meeting and leisure, and development of joint sales and marketing programs and cooperative opportunities.
  • Represent the organizations best interest in all industry related social and business functions as needed.
  • Prepares necessary reports of divisions activities, to include monthly dashboard reporting, website activity, and social and digital media generated results.
  • Oversees special projects and applicable information technology issues.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Six (6) years of experience in the areas of Marketing/ Advertising and Communications applied to destination promotions.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment and a Criminal History Records check upon employment.
  • Must maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport at all times.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from accredited college or university.
  • Experience in marketing and airport communications.
  • 5 years of experience managing a marketing agency, creative agency, PR agency or similar.
  • American Association of Airport Executives.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of advertising and promotion with emphasis on the convention and visitor industry.
  • Knowledge of local visitor attractions and meeting facilities.
  • Knowledge of the needs of the local hotels and attractions.
  • Knowledge of trends regarding traditional, digital, social media and research methods and technology.
  • Knowledge of advertising terminology, procedures, practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and personnel management.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs and Internet application to the hospitality industry and database management
  • Ability to formulate new techniques and strategies for more efficient operation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
