Position Summary

The Grid Modernization Engineer duties include the identification, assessment, and piloting of new advanced technologies (related to Distribution Automation, Energy Storage, Microgrids, etc.) through established processes for the advancement of electric reliability, resilience, and affordable integration of distributed energy resources onto the CPS Energy electric system.

The Engineer will lead the execution and management of assigned projects and deliverables (including providing technical expertise, process application and oversight, technical and organizational risk evaluation/mitigation, cost/budget/receivable adherence, quality management, and cross-functional stakeholder team management) to meet departmental goals and business objectives.

Tasks and Responsibilities

•Responsible for research and implementation of new advanced technologies (i.e., Distribution Automation, Energy Storage, and Microgrids, etc.) that transform the CPS Energy grid.
•Responsible for the management of projects and deliverables which include providing technical expertise, process application and oversight, technical and organizational risk evaluations/mitigation strategies, cost/budget/receivable adherence, quality management, and cross-functional stakeholder team management.
•Responsible for maintaining effective communications with sponsor, stakeholders, team members, and all project participants to ensure cohesive coordination of effort to effectively meet project goals and requirements.
•Responsible for the preparation and delivery of effective presentations on technical topics, project status, and team activities to diverse audiences to CPS Energy internal, local, state, or national venues.
•Assist in the management of external contract resources and joint relationships on research programs with organizations such as EPRI, UTSA, national labs, governmental agencies, utilities, and others as assigned.
•Assist in driving team engagement and growth through planned and unplanned engagement plans and activities.
•Attend seminars and industry events to represent CPS Energy and for continued education opportunities for professional development.
•Possess and applies a broad knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
•Demonstrates ability to effectively handle a broad range of engineering assignments with minimum supervision.
•May include limited supervisory responsibilities, including lower-level engineers.
•Make frequent independent decisions and recommendations that affect the section, department, and/or division.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Texas Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures.
Demonstrated mastery of engineering discipline skills.
Ability to lead cross-functional business initiatives and teams.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a broad range of engineering assignments with minimum supervision.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams on internal projects.
Demonstrated ability to manage project costs, timeline, scope, and risks.
Ability to effectively check work product for adequacy, quality and accuracy.
Effective communication skills focused on understanding customer needs and developing resolution.
Strong people skills, with bias for a collaborative working style.
Ability to work call duty and occasional unscheduled work in the evenings, weekends, or holidays after experience level permits.
Ability to travel occasionally, to off-site work, to seminars, manufacturing plant inspections, etc.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

•Master’s degree from an accredited university
•Broad knowledge of distribution automation and related areas
•Experience in the implementation of new technologies to include business and technical assessment of products, project management or process design and implementation.
•Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems.
•Experience with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
•Experience with SAP and Work Manager software
•Experience with CYME or other modeling software
•Experience with Hadoop and Hive and the ability to work with large data sets.

Minimum Education

Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
