Position Summary

The Engineer position is responsible for supporting the electric distribution system reliability, capacity and power quality. The Engineer will complete studies and generate system improvement projects supporting adequate voltage, capacity, system protection and power quality and will analyze, design and manage distribution projects for both near term (1-5 years) and long term (6-10 years). The Engineer will be required to work with multiple departments during project creation and make necessary adjustments to coordinate projects when possible. The Engineer will also be responsible for reviewing and approving job designs created by CPS Energy planners and provide necessary technical support. Update distribution planning philosophies and guidelines to ensure quality and efficiency and participate on multiple teams evaluating new technologies and the potential effects they may have on the distribution system.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Focuses on operational/tactical aspects of the work
  • Recommends improvements to processes and procedures
  • Handles work content that is increasingly complex
  • Applies engineering skills that include evaluation and ingenuity
  • Makes some independent decisions and often makes recommendations that affect the section, department and/or division
  • Decisions have identifiable but relatively moderate impact on costs, timeline, safety and reliability
  • May provide input to area budget
  • Applies knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned
  • Plan adequate distribution circuit and power transformer capacity to serve peak demand and contingencies
  • Review and plan improvements projects to maintain adequate voltage and conductor loading levels for the electric distribution system
  • Evaluate circuit service areas and protection arrangements for improvements in efficiency and/or reliability
  • Monitor distribution circuit power factors and plan efficient circuit reactive power supplies
  • Evaluate circuit configurations for installations of automated circuit sectionalizing devices
  • Evaluate Distributed Generation (DG) applications and evaluate impact on the distribution system and provide remediation recommendations
  • Forecast demand loads after gathering information from internal sources, Chamber of Commerce, real estate planning and zoning, etc.
  • Develop conceptual system improvement plans and prioritize all recommended projects with appropriate need by date
  • Perform system protection coordination studies
  • Perform motor start analysis
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of other related areas and how they influence operational/tactical aspects
  • Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems and Bentley Microstation software
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
  • Experience with SAP and Work Manager software
  • Experience in power systems analysis, distribution and or substation engineering
  • Exhibits the highest level of engineering judgment/technical expertise and may include limited supervisory responsibilities
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards
  • Knowledge of GIS/Designer, Work Manager, and SAP
  • Knowledge of CYME or equivalent power analysis software
  • Knowledge of PI Processbook/Historian
  • Knowledge of Microstation CAD drafting program
  • Experience with modeling distributed energy resources
  • Experience with Volt/VAR and CVR management technologies
  • Experience with Advanced Metering Infrastructure AMI data analytics

Minimum Education

Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or universit Engineer In Training (EIT) designation from Texas Board of Prof Engineers OR Demonstration of advanced skills or specialization appli to the busi area

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
