The Department of Periodontics
The UT San Antonio School of Dentistry invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Periodontics. We seek an accomplished clinician-scientist with a strong record of excellence in clinical care, research and academic leadership to guide a dynamic department within a leading academic health center.
The Chair will provide strategic vision, administrative leadership, and operational oversight for all aspects of the department, including the integrated dental hygiene education and practice, advancing department missions in education, patient care, research, and community service.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Administration
Provide visionary leadership for the Department of Periodontics and associated dental hygiene programs, including strategic planning, faculty development, resource management, and educational administration.
Foster a collaborative and high-performing departmental culture.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards for predoctoral, residency, and dental hygiene programs.
Ensure compliance with regental, institutional, and school policies and procedures.
Clinical Excellence
Maintain and advance high-quality, evidence-based periodontal, implant, and dental hygiene care.
Support clinical innovation and integration of emerging technologies.
Education:
Oversee predoctoral and advanced periodontal education programs.
Promote excellence in teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development.
Support interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning initiatives.
Research & Scholarship:
Lead and grow a vibrant research program that includes clinical trials and aligns with institutional and school priorities.
Mentor faculty and trainees in research and scholarly activities.
Strengthen extramural funding and collaborative research efforts.
Service & Community Engagement:
Advance the school mission to serve the community through collaborative outreach with the Associate Dean of Community Engagement.
Promote community-based and preventative care initiatives that incorporate dental hygiene services.
Required Qualifications:
DDS/DMD (or equivalent) and completion of a CODA-accredited advance education program in periodontics.
American Board of Periodontology certified.
Demonstrated leadership as a clinician-scientist, with sustained scholarly productivity and successful research portfolio.
Academic credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor with Tenure.
Experience of 10 or more years of leadership in an academic institution, demonstrating multiple programmatic successes.

Demonstrated excellence in mentoring faculty, residents, and students at a dental school.
Eligibility for licensure in the State of Texas.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; administrative, and financial management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience fostering interdisciplinary and translational research.
