The Director of Nursing Practice provides strategic leadership in advancing nursing excellence and regulatory compliance across the organization. This role leads the foundational work to position the hospital for American Nurses Credentialing Center - ANCC Magnet designation by partnering with the Chief Nursing Officer and nursing leadership to integrate the Magnet Model components into nursing practice. The Director also oversees the Nursing Peer Review (NPR) process and Committee, ensuring adherence to Texas Board of Nursing (BON) regulations. Responsibilities include leading Safe Harbor reviews, minor incident consults, and diversion investigations; collecting, analyzing, and reporting peer review data; and serving as the primary liaison with the BON and TPAPN. Through strategic governance and continuous improvement, the Director fosters a culture of accountability, professional growth, and ethical nursing practice that supports both regulatory excellence and the organization’s mission of delivering high-quality patient care.
  • Masters degree required.
  • Strong understanding of the Magnet Model, professional practice models, and ANCC readiness requirements.
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing scope of practice across LVN, RN, and APRN levels within the state of Texas.
  • Demonstrated strategic planning, program development, and quality improvement experience to enhance professional practice and nurse engagement.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change and foster a culture of nursing excellence, accountability, and empowerment.
  • Strong business acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent judgment in complex situations.
  • Skilled in project management, data tracking, and process evaluation to support continuous improvement.

  • Serves as the primary subject matter expert and point of contact for all matters related to nursing practice standards, peer review, and compliance with Texas Board of Nursing (BON) regulations.
  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Nursing Peer Review (NPR) process and Committee, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant reviews in accordance with BON requirements.
  • Leads Safe Harbor reviews, minor incident consults, and diversion investigations, ensuring objective evaluation and appropriate follow-up.
  • Partners closely with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to align peer review outcomes with organizational goals, regulatory expectations, and Magnet designation readiness.
  • Oversees NPR committee operations, including member onboarding, training, and facilitation of meetings with nursing staff and leaders.
  • Develops and maintains all NPR documentation, databases, and records, ensuring secure storage and confidentiality of all peer review materials.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports peer review and nursing practice data to drive quality improvement and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership to develop, review, and update policies, procedures, and protocols that promote ethical, evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Designs and delivers training and educational programs on peer review, Safe Harbor, professional accountability, and nursing compliance standards.
  • Leads the Magnet® program readiness efforts, embedding professional practice models and shared governance principles into nursing operations.
  • Identifies and mitigates potential risk or non-compliance issues related to nursing practice through proactive monitoring and corrective action.
  • Develops and manages the department's operational budget, including forecasting and variance management to ensure cost-effective program delivery.
  • Utilizes data analytics and reporting to evaluate trends in nursing practice, staff engagement, and regulatory adherence.
  • Promotes a culture of nursing excellence, continuous learning, and professional accountability, aligning with the organization's mission and values.
  • Represents nursing practice and compliance initiatives in executive, regulatory, and interdepartmental forums, fostering transparency and collaboration.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the advancement of nursing practice and patient care quality.
