Clinical Research Nurse Practitioner

The Barshop Institute in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio is seeking two Clinical Research Nurse Practitioners (NP) for the faculty position of Specialist. The qualified individuals will provide specialized clinical and operational support for clinical trials and geroscience protocols. Operating under protocol governance, the Research NP performs participant screenings, specialized procedural assessments (including tissue biopsies), and safety monitoring in strict adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), protocol parameters, and institutional standards. This role also assists with clinical workflow coordination, visit preparation, and study start-up operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Participant Evaluation & Safety:
  • Conduct reviews of medical history, diagnostic labs, and physical examinations to evaluate study inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Monitor and manage participant health concerns; document adverse events (AEs/SAEs) and provide OTC recommendations or PCP referrals in accordance with study protocols.
  • Maintain protocol adherence and evaluate clinical safety concerns.
• Procedural & Clinical Execution:
  • Perform diagnostic and research procedures, including muscle, adipose, and skin biopsies, peripheral IV insertions, cardiac monitoring for cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and blood draws following legal, ethical, and institutional safety guidelines.
  • Prepare sterile fields, autoclave surgical/biopsy instruments, prep procedure rooms, and handle biohazard waste disposal.
• Clinical Operations & Workflow:
  • Support daily clinic flow, oversee procedure scheduling, and assist with participant recruitment.
  • Prepare study forms, lab kits, tube labels, and medical equipment for daily visits.
  • Order and inventory laboratory/medical supplies, maintain clinic equipment, and track completed procedures for study invoicing.
  • Ensure accurate and timely research data entry into electronic capture systems.
• Regulatory & Study Start-Up:
  • Maintain research data integrity and quality in compliance with GCP, sponsor guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist in feasibility and study start-up workflows, including pre-study site visits, feasibility questionnaires, and coordinator resource allocation.
  • Maintain flexibility to support occasional after-hours study visits as protocol timelines require.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education & Licensure: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program; current, unencumbered APRN/Nurse Practitioner license in the State of Texas; national board certification (e.g., AANP, ANCC).
• Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; GCP and Human Subjects Protection certifications (or completed upon hire). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
• Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of clinical NP experience; demonstrated proficiency in minor procedural skills (biopsies, phlebotomy, IV placement).
• Skills: Strong understanding of regulatory standards, exceptional organizational abilities, and proficiency with clinical documentation/EDC platforms.
• Flexibility to work variable hours, including occasional early morning, afterhours, or weekend visits, based on protocol requirements and participant scheduling needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in academic medicine, clinical research coordination, or clinical trial execution.
• Proven background performing skin, fat, or muscle biopsies, or cardiac monitoring in research or clinical settings.
