Job Description

Under direct supervision, responsibilities include on-site OR (donation and transplant) support and scheduling, provision of pulsatile perfusion in donated kidneys, and reviewing and communicating donor history surgical team.

Schedule: 12-hour shifts from 7am - 7pm or 7pm to 7am. Weekends may be required. Flexibility in schedule required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the surgical recovery, allocation and transport or transplantable organs.
  • Understands and demonstrates proper OR techniques and UNOS guidelines for flushing, packaging and transporting organs in a safe manner.
  • Establishes PAR and maintains pulsatile perfusion equipment, supplies and instrumentation Initiates, manages and tracks pulsatile perfusion on donated kidneys and livers recovered for transplantation.
  • Assists in transplant and non-transplant surgical services.
  • Follow OPTN policies for labeling donor organs Follows OPTN policies for labeling, packaging and storing vessels.
  • Medication and Blood Product Administration: Accurately administer protocol medications and blood products to organ perfusion machines to ensure optimal organ function for transplantation.
  • Perfusion Monitoring: Closely monitor organ perfusion parameters, including vital signs, blood gases, and flow rates, to identify and address potential issues.
  • Machine Operation: Operate and maintain organ perfusion machines, ensuring their proper functioning and calibration.
  • Protocol Adherence: Strictly adhere to established organ perfusion protocols to maintain quality standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Data Recording and Documentation: Accurately document all procedures, medication administration, and perfusion parameters in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and troubleshoot technical issues with perfusion machines and organ perfusion processes.
  • Quality Assurance: Contribute to quality improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for process optimization and standardization.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate surgeon’s performance of invasive therapeutic procedures.
  • Beginner Assist surgeons during organ recoveries.
  • Beginner Demonstrated knowledge in the coordination of patient care in medical or surgical settings.
  • Intermediate Demonstrated proficiency and continued growth in the knowledge of tissue/organ transplantation.
  • Beginner Proficient with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office.
  • Intermediate Detail oriented with meticulous planning and organizational skills while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Intermediate Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills Intermediate

EDUCATION:

Certified Surgical Technician, Surgical Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, Anesthesia Technician, LVN, or Health Care related field is required

EXPERIENCE:

One to two (1-2) years experience within an OR setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

Active LVN license or Certified Surgical Technologist required. Certified Pulsatile Technician (CST) is preferred

TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.

Time Off - A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:
  • Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
  • Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
  • Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
  • Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year.
FSAs - Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.
