Pharmacy Narcotic Integrity Specialist
Job Description
The Pharmacy Narcotic Integrity Specialist is responsible for securing storage, managing, and overseeing controlled substances, ensuring compliance with DEA regulations and UT Health System policies. Maintains narcotic integrity across UT Health San Antonio by conducting audits and identifying and resolving discrepancies in narcotic utilization. Manages pharmacy software vendor relations to ensure inventory accuracy, oversee medication dispensing and disposal, mitigate shortages, and generate reports. Collaborates with the Pharma Business Specialist on procurement activities, ensuring the seamless acquisition and distribution of controlled substances. Operating independently, this role works closely with the Pharmacy Director to uphold safe medication use and patient safety.
Responsibilities
Ensures strict adherence to DEA regulations and UT Health System policies regarding controlled substances, maintaining the highest standards of legal and ethical responsibility. Oversees the secure distribution, handling, and integrity of all narcotic use across UT Health San Antonio, preventing diversion and ensuring proper documentation. Conducts routine audits of narcotic utilization, identifying discrepancies, investigating root causes, and implementing corrective actions to maintain compliance and accuracy. Proactively addresses all narcotic-related discrepancies, coordinating with relevant personnel to resolve issues efficiently and prevent future occurrences. Manages vendor relationships and procurement processes, ensuring consistent supply of controlled substances and compliance with purchasing regulations. Utilizes Pharmacy management software, such as Bluesight, to monitor controlled substance inventory, track utilization trends, generate reports, and implement system updates for accuracy and efficiency. Work closely with the pharmacy business specialist to ensure optimal vendor management and inventory accountability. Prepares detailed reports on narcotic usage, discrepancies, compliance issues, and system updates for internal and regulatory review. Performs other duties as assigned to support pharmacy operations.
Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of drug names, medical terminology, and pharmaceutical calculations. Proficiency in common computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Expertise in pharmacy management systems such as Epic, Omnicell, and Bluesight software. Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with hospital staff and patients. Advanced critical thinking, investigation, and analytical skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions. Excellent customer service skills, prioritizing patient and hospital team needs while demonstrating empathy in all interactions. Strong organizational and time management skills, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in task completion.
Education:
- High School Graduate or Equivalent Required
- Technical School; Pharmacy Technician Curriculum
Licenses/Certifications:
- CPhT Certified Pharmacy Technician Required Upon Hire
- LPT Licenses Pharmacy Technician Required Upon Hire

About Us
- Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
