Athletic Trainer Specialist

The nationally recognized Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, Department of Orthopaedics, Division of Sports Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated full time Athletic Trainer to join our team as a full-time faculty member which will be working with UTSA softball athletes.

Position Summary:

This position will provide comprehensive athletic training services to student-athletes, coaching staff, and members of the Athletic Department. The Athletic Trainer will support UT San Antonio’s NCAA Division I softball, focusing on injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, emergency response, and rehabilitation.

This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative and dynamic team, contributing to the health and performance of UTSA softball athletes, which compete in the American Athletic Conference. The successful candidate will serve as a key liaison between athletes, coaches, medical professionals, and support staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care in both clinical and field settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver athletic training services to UTSA student-softball athletes in both the training facility and at athletic events.

  • Attend home and away games as assigned in coordination with Sports Medicine faculty or leadership.

  • Implement preventive injury programs tailored to individual and team needs.

  • Collaborate with the sports medicine team to develop and execute treatment and rehabilitation plans.

  • Provide on-site acute care and emergency management for athletic injuries.

  • Monitor and manage concussion protocols in accordance with institutional and NCAA guidelines.

  • Maintain consistent follow-up care and communication with athletes regarding injury status.

  • Support sponsored sporting and community events as needed.

  • Serve as the liaison between athletes, team physicians, coaches, and other medical professionals.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, Physical Education, or a related field.
  • Board of Certification (BOC) in Athletic Training.
  • Eligible for or possession of a Texas Athletic Training License.
  • Current CPR and AED certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in athletic training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in athletic training or a related field.
  • Experience working in a collegiate sports environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities.
