The Senior Mammography Technologist independently performs advanced screening and diagnostic mammography procedures in an outpatient clinical setting, serving as a subject-matter expert in breast imaging. Supports complex diagnostic evaluations, interventional procedures, and contrast-enhanced mammography, while ensuring the highest standards of image quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. The Senior Technologist serves as a clinical resource to peers, supports quality initiatives, and models best practices aligned with UT Health San Antonio's mission, vision, and values.


Advanced knowledge of mammography imaging techniques, breast pathology, and diagnostic evaluation processes. Expert understanding of MQSA, ACR accreditation standards, EQUIP regulations, and quality control requirements. Proficiency in stereotactic procedures and working knowledge of contrast-enhanced mammography; familiarity with breast ultrasound and MRI workflows. Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to manage complex cases, prioritize workflow, and address emergent clinical needs. Advanced patient communication skills, including the ability to support patients during complex or anxiety-provoking procedures. Demonstrated ability to function autonomously while collaborating closely with radiologists and multidisciplinary teams. Proficiency in PACS, EMR systems, and departmental imaging technologies. Ability to identify image quality issues, protocol deviations, or safety concerns and take corrective action.   • Independently perform advanced screening and diagnostic mammography examinations, including complex and specialized studies.
  • Perform and support stereotactic and interventional breast imaging procedures in collaboration with radiologists.
  • Administer contrast agents and perform IV-related tasks using sterile or aseptic technique when applicable.
  • Adjust imaging techniques and exposure factors for patients with implants, post-surgical changes, or other complex considerations.
  • Evaluate images for diagnostic quality and ensure compliance with departmental, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Identify gross pathological findings and promptly notify the radiologist as appropriate.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for mammography staff, providing guidance on protocols, positioning, and quality improvement.
  • Ensure imaging studies are accurately documented, coded, and charged in accordance with billing and compliance requirements.
  • Educate patients regarding breast imaging procedures, breast self-exams, screening guidelines, and follow-up expectations.
  • Monitor and promote radiation safety practices, ensuring adherence to ALARA principles.
  • Maintain oversight of equipment readiness, quality control checks, and supply availability.
  • Participate in quality assurance, accreditation readiness, and performance improvement activities.
  • Support onboarding, training, and informal mentoring of less experienced technologists.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical teams to support efficient outpatient clinic operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals.
