Under limited supervision, formulates and plans patient menus based on diet requirements in accordance with physician orders and general dietetic standards and rules. May monitor and assign work to other dieticians.
- Requires knowledge and experience with a wide range of disease entities, treatment modalities and drug/nutrient interactions.
- Experience in providing nutrition care in inpatient and outpatient settings for a wide variety of disease states.
- Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate aspects of the treatment program.
- Ability to communicate in a courteous, pleasant and professional manner.
- Ability to observe a patient's issues, and analyze what is needed to help them without putting them at further risk.
- Ability to work one-on-one with patients every day and be a good communicator and listener.
- Ability to talk with patients and their families and be able and willing to deliver both good and bad news in the most compassionate way possible.
- Treats patients with complex nutritional deficiencies, determines extent and duration of diet therapy, and instructs patients and patients' families on appropriate diet and nutrition plans.
- Establishes a plan of care based on patients health status/risks, education, and support needs.
- Develops and monitors established nutrition plans, in collaboration with the patient and/or attending physician.
- Provides guidance, assistance, and explanations to patients and family members to help them understand, accept, and follow dietary modifications ordered by the physician.
- Instructs patients and family members on dietary restrictions and drug/nutrient interactions as appropriate.
- Observes patients' responses to dietary treatment, notes changes in their condition and advises Physicians/Nurse Supervisors.
- Revises nutritional plan as appropriate based on patients' condition and physician’s orders.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
