The intermediate Mammography Technologist independently performs high-quality screening and diagnostic mammography examinations in an outpatient clinical setting. Provides direct patient care across diverse populations, ensures compliance with MQSA and ACR standards, and supports radiologists during diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures. The technologist applies sound clinical judgment, delivers compassionate, patient-centered care, and contributes to a safe, efficient, and high-quality breast imaging environment aligned with UT Health San Antonio's mission, vision, and values.
Demonstrated knowledge of screening and diagnostic mammography principles, breast anatomy, positioning, and image quality standards. Working knowledge of MQSA, ACR accreditation, EQUIP regulations, and quality control requirements. Ability to operate mammography imaging equipment and related technologies in an outpatient clinical environment. Proficiency in PACS, electronic medical records, and basic computer applications. Strong patient communication skills with the ability to explain procedures, reduce anxiety, and respond to questions with empathy and professionalism. Demonstrated attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to address image quality, patient needs, and workflow challenges. Ability to function independently while collaborating effectively with radiologists, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members. Perform screening and diagnostic mammography examinations independently in accordance with established protocols and quality standards. Prepare patients for procedures by verifying identity, obtaining relevant clinical history, explaining the examination process, and addressing patient concerns. Select appropriate imaging equipment, accessories, and exposure factors based on patient anatomy and clinical indications. Evaluate images for proper positioning, identification, labeling, and diagnostic quality; repeat or adjust images as necessary. Assist radiologists during diagnostic and interventional breast imaging procedures as assigned. Accurately document patient history, exam details, findings, and technical factors in the electronic medical record. Upload images and associated data to PACS and ensure studies are routed appropriately for interpretation. Apply radiopaque markers and document anatomical findings (e.g., scars, lumps, moles) per departmental protocol. Follow radiation safety principles, including ALARA and Image Gently guidelines, to protect patients and staff. Maintain clean, organized, and safe exam rooms; ensure equipment functionality and restock supplies as needed. Recognize patient distress or adverse reactions and initiate appropriate response and escalation per protocol. Participate in quality assurance activities, accept feedback, and implement technique improvements as needed. Communicate effectively during hand-offs to ensure continuity of care. Perform other related duties as assigned to support clinic operations.
