Summary Description: This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting the Field Food Safety and Quality Assurance programs in accordance with established Company policies. Ensures food safety and quality standards are maintained according to related regulatory agencies. Collaborates with Restaurant Operations to achieve maximum results in control of quality and food safety within the units. Partners with management to communicate food safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews regulatory inspection reports and GFSI audits from suppliers, follows up on action plans to achieve compliance.
  • Reviews and analyzes Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) audits of products and follows up with suppliers to ensure the highest quality products.
  • Conducts supplier and product audits to ensure our supply chain meets Whataburger standards.
  • Leads product withdrawal or Recall efforts in the event of safety or quality concerns.
  • Maintains Food Safety Quality Assurance files.
  • Contributes to the design, development, and implementation of unit-level Food Safety programs, such as 3rd party audits, regulatory inspection reports (Health inspections), and Safe and Sound program.
  • Collaborates with Category managers purchasing products to ensure approval and compliance with our standards
  • Acts as a liaison between suppliers and units for product complaints in their respective category.
  • Serves as a liaison between regulatory and industry officials to maintain knowledge of and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Presents regulatory/legislative comments to proposed rules as necessary.
  • Oversees and determines general and administrative budget for Quality Assurance (QA) and Food Safety departments.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Safety or related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience required

Experience:

  • Experience in contributing to the management of projects is preferred
  • 3+ years’ experience preferably in manufacturing and/or restaurant industry

Knowledge, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Visio (as applicable)
  • Proficiency in Workday (as applicable)
  • Ability to communicate well with the general public and experience in establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with management, vendors, and co-workers
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Technical knowledge of food safety, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), quality systems, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and regulatory requirements regarding products and restaurants

Professional Certification:

  • Certified in HACCP, GFSI, BRC, SQF or other food safety/QA audit certifications preferred

Working Conditions/Travel Requirements:

  • Expected to work the necessary time to satisfactorily fulfill job responsibilities
  • Must be able to report to work timely and as required by operational/business needs
  • Must be able to work a full-time schedule and work outside of normal business hours when necessary
  • Must be able to travel occasionally both locally and long distances (including air travel), to worksites, meeting sites, and other locations
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, submit to releasing a Motor Vehicle Record that adheres to the Whataburger standards and maintain current automobile liability at minimum levels in their state of residence
